Kidney stones affect approximately 9% of our population. This number was mainly composed of men; however, the incidence has risen rapidly over the last 15 years, particularly for women. Participating in an exercise regimen, even low to moderate exercise, can decrease the risk of getting kidney stones by up to 31% (varies upon activity levels). Two factors of concern that raise the risk of obtaining kidney stones are obesity and calcium supplements, which are usually taken by post-menopausal women. Recent research states that calcium supplements are not needed for healthy, older women due to its correlation with kidney stones.
